Jail security for Nat'l TV chief upped
08 Mar 2010

KATHMANDU: Security for the Chairman of National Television, Yunus Ansari, who has been lodged at the Central Jail, has been tightened, officials said today.

Police yesterday revealed that Ansari was the first target of murderers who shot dead Space Time Network Chairman Jamim Shah.

Ansari has been charged with dealing in counterfeit Indian currency and is now spending days in the jail.

The Himalayan Times today talked to the Under Secretary and Jailer of the Central Jail in Sundhara, Chettra Bahadur Bhandari, a source at the Nepal Police (NP) and the Kathmandu Chief District Officer (CDO), Laxmi Dhakal, on what security arrangements have been made for Ansari as he is under threat.

According to the NP source, while serial killer Charles Gurumukh Sobhraj was arrested on September 19, 2003 and sentenced to life in prison on August 12, 2004, Indian criminal-turned-politician Rajesh Ranjan, aka Pappu Dev Yadhav, was arrested from Sundhara on August 9, 2002 and sent to the Central Jail. They have also been under the special security.

According to the source, the Central Jail also keeps prisoners from other districts. “We have a special security battalion inside the jail for the security of select prisoners. Ansari is under this battalion, but we cannot give the details due to security reasons”, jailer Bhandari said.

According to him, the police have tightened security for Ansari inside the jail.“The timings for his family members to visit him in jail have been changed,” Bhandari added. CDO Dhakal also confirmed that security for Ansari has been made “very tight”.

“As all those involved in Shah’s killing are not behind bars, we have provided special security for Ansari, while police also believe that he may be needed, somewhere, sometime, as the Shah murder probe moves forward.”
